Education is all about learning things to be prepared for the future

Exclusive Interview of Pukhraj Prajapat
How did you get interested in the computer field? Your first interaction with a computer?
Well, in my high school 2001 it was the first time when computers were applied as a compulsory subject and the fact was it was not easy for anyone to afford a computer that time. So, my perception was that a computer is a boring black screen with white text machine or so which people use to do some accounting related work or so. The reason was that in tier 3 cities like Bikaner, computers that time were mostly available in banks only with some DOS based programs.
But then, when I interacted with the computer for the first time, I found that it can play music, video and games. This interaction changed my whole perception about computers and made me curious to learn more about it.
Since when have you been working in the IT Industry?
I started developing programs and selling those during my graduation but if I say official joining to the IT industry, it was 2007 when I joined the first IT company Sunarc Technologies.
Your engineering degree and major & minor subjects?
While entering the engineering field, it was already decided that I’m going to go with computer science. I chose the Information Technology stream which is more focused on the software industry.

Your professional journey? Companies you have been working for as an employee? Clients/Companies you have been working for as a vendor or service provider?
Making it quick, I started my professional journey in 2007 with a well recognized company in my city, SunArc Technologies. I worked there for a year and I’m thankful to them that they respected my hard work there and accelerated my position from Jr. developer to Project Manager within a year. My first project which I worked on for months was DrivingSales.com and proudly it's a well known automotive industry media company today.
After SunArc Technologies, I started my freelance career in 2009 and worked for numerous clients from USA, Canada and Singapore.
Finally, in 2011, I co-founded G-Axon with a sense to organize my work more and create job opportunities for others. And I can proudly say that it has been a successful ongoing mission till today as we have trained and employed people with non-technical skills or even those people who didn’t even have a degree. The great thing is that these people delivered and have been delivering IT projects successfully with all the standards and compliances. Seeing these people’s excitement and hunger to learn is astonishing.
What problems have you observed in the education system while working as an employee in the IT industry?
Well, what I have observed is that when a student gets out of their educational degree or diploma, they are called freshers. During my college period, I always wondered, why do they call us freshers? I had the knowledge on writing programs. I was really good at that but then when I joined my company, I came to know that writing a good programming logic is not enough. There are a lot of things which matter and need to learn before actually starting working in the industry. Then my pain point was, why did I not know about this during my B.Tech? I had lots of time and energy during that period.
So, I believe that the primary glitch in the education system is only delivering academic knowledge. Making it applicable, connecting with the IT industries through workshops, a student having a mentor who has work experience in the IT industry etc. are key elements which must be part of the education system.
Many big named colleges are doing this today but talking about India, I believe only 5-10% or so are doing this successfully. In tier 3 cities, this is still a very big problem.
What you observed about education problems while working as a service provider/CEO at G-Axon?
While working as a service provider whether you are working under a company or as an independent freelancer, other than the technical skills required to do the work, you must be good at professional ethics which includes the qualities like accountability, being punctual, being good at communication, understanding the value of time, working in a collaboration, conveying your thoughts and following instructions etc.
I have found either these topics are not taught in the academics or being taught impractically. That's the reason many people who come to work as a fresher to the IT industry or join a startup struggle a lot in their first few years.
If these things can be taught in an interesting and applicable manner then this will work like a power booster to boost their career.
How do you see the education problem as a whole or in the large picture?
You know, Swami Vivekanada once said, “Let your preparations be wise, correct and of such kind that will lead to your true welfare, supreme good and lasting satisfaction and happiness. This must engage your active, enthusiastic attention throughout the period of your youth life.”
Education is all about learning things to be prepared for the future. And if we look into the depth there is one and only purpose to learn things and that is to live well. Or in simple terms we can say, happily, prosperously enjoying your life which includes the knowledge you acquire, the nature and people around you and the money you earn to run your life with satisfaction.
So, I believe every learning should be based on the answers of the four questions like What, Why, When and How:
-
What is there to learn? (without knowing you can answer why)
-
Why should you learn that? (what is it going to add to your life and achieve your end goal of living well?)
-
And if only you can find a solid reasoning of Why, then the answer to When. Choose the right time to learn that thing.
-
How to learn? Once it is decided that you are going to learn then setting up a path and making guided learning is important.
In our education system, I have felt two problems, the first one is that these four answers of learning are not taken care of, especially the Why. And the second one is that our learning is not connected to nature (for example, why computers, how exactly they work, what is 0 and 1, how memories work, what is an element, how silicon is making it all work, what is the base of life, talking about spirituality, philosophies etc.), when these things are missing in the learning, a person cannot actually connect to the learning and create something extraordinary. She or he can use what is already available and do ordinary things but the ability to imagine building something solid and creative will be unachievable to them.
Impact of education on nation, economy, politics, people’s lives etc.
Another quote from Swami Vivekananda is, “My hope of the future lies in the youths of character, intelligent, renouncing all for the service of others, and obedient – good to themselves and the country at large”.
A good education system can help in shaping the character of the youth, pursue their true potential, earn well and live their life prosperously and this highly impacts the economy, decision making of choosing politicians or becoming part of the politics. So, for sure, education is the primary pillar to be focused on to build a strong nation.
Why did you start as an engineer?
How things work has always been fascinating to me. I used to sit alongside my nanaji and see him repairing things. My nanaji was a railway workshop technician. So, engineering is something which I always found exciting.
When I first saw the computer doing these playing music, videos and games, I saw the future and I completely delved into this field.
Mission of Engramers
Engramers mission can be summarized in the following quote from Swami Vivekanand:“We must be always ready to sit at the feet of all, for, mark you, everyone can teach us great lessons, At the same time we must not forget that we also have to teach a great lesson to the world.”
As Engramers, our mission is to deliver education in a naturally easy and interesting way to help others in achieving their true potential and live a happy and prosperous life which leads to nation building and a better world as a whole.
How will Engramers help students in developing themselves and making good career choices?
-
Engramers includes four things in their courses which has been helping our students in achieving their true potential and making a good career:
-
Raising and answering questions to make a decision about the subjects they really want to study and helping them to recognize their talent.
-
Natural, Academic and Applicable knowledge based learning
-
Workshops with working professionals who has been applying that knowledge for years in the real-world
-
Connecting them with leaders, new ideas, new technologies, philosophical ideas, spirituality via lectures or seminars from our special guests. This helps them in building their personality, communication skills etc.
-
Helping them in building their strong presentation online and offline.
-
In the final stage once they are ready to go to the industry, we help them in connecting with the right industries and arranging their interviews. So, this requires less effort to find their place in the industry.
